The Morecambe-based racer was in superb form as he set lap records on two of six circuits of the island's famous 37.73-mile Mountain Course.

The HM Plant Honda rider came home ahead of Ulster-based Welshman Ian Lougher while Ian Hutchinson was third.

McGuinness also set a race record of one hour 48minutes 52.06secs.

"It is not only me - a lot of preparation has gone into this from the whole team," said 33-year-old McGuinness.

"I felt really strong throughout the whole race and it was a really good, fun, high-speed ride."

It had been McGuinness and Hutchinson who were riding neck and neck against the clock as they led the timings into the Glen Helen section.

But by Ballaugh Bridge McGuinness was out on his own with Guy Martin, who had set off first on the number one-plated AIM Racing Yamaha R1, forced to retire at Sulby Bridge.

By the time McGuinness passed Bungalow he had a 9.6-second advantage over second-placed Lougher.

And as he roared over the start-finish line at 171.1mph, McGuinness had clocked an opening-lap time of 17mins 42.52sec at an average speed of 127.835mph to set an official lap record.

TAS Suzuki rider Bruce Anstey was forced to retire early on alongside team-mate Adrian Archibald - a third consecutive TT race the Irishman has failed to finish.

McGuinness embarked on his sixth and final lap 39.64secs ahead of Lougher before bringing home the 1000cc Fireblade.
