Byrne is determined to make the most of his opportunity |
Shane Byrne has been given his big break in MotoGP by landing a Camel Honda ride for the next two races. The former British Superbike champion made his MotoGP debut in 2004 on an uncompetitive Aprilia before an even tougher stint with Proton KR this year.
Byrne is standing in for the injured Troy Bayliss in Malaysia and Qatar.
"It's an unbelievable chance," said the Londoner, who will become the first British rider to ride a factory machine in the premier class for over a decade.
"I am absolutely made up but I'm under no illusions how tough it will be.
"Everybody's expectations will be very high but it's a great chance for me after such a tough year.
"You never know what is going happen next and I've been given a big chance and I aim to give it my very best shot."
Byrne has missed the last two races after problems at Proton KR.
The 28-year-old was contracted to KTM rather than the team and when the two parties split before the Czech Republic Grand Prix, he was left without a ride.
