Shane Byrne broke his wrist during practice for the Czech Republic GP |
Shane Byrne says his MotoGP future is still not sorted out. The 2003 British Superbike champion, who has not signed a deal for 2005, had a difficult debut year in MotoGP with a broken wrist cutting short his season.
But he showed his promise before his season ended and claimed Aprilia's best result of the campaign with a 10th-place finish in Italy.
"Unfortunately there is no news on next year yet and it's driving me totally bonkers," he said.
Byrne has had talks with several teams, including the D'Antin Ducati outfit, and has been asked to test for Aprilia later this month at Jerez.
"The only slight breakthrough is that Aprilia have asked me to go down to Jerez to test the bike that I was supposed to be racing since the beginning of the season," he said.
"It will be good to get a shot on that to see how much of an improvement they've made.
"I reckon that if I'd charged a pound for every time somebody asked me what I'm doing next year then I wouldn't have to worry about racing as I'd have made about a million quid anyway.
"The only problem is that unfortunately I really don't know myself so it's all a bit frustrating."
Four British riders started the 2004 MotoGP season but none are guaranteed a place in motorcycling's elite for next year.
Neil Hodgson has moved to the United States-based AMA Superbike series, Jeremy McWilliams is in talks over a switch to British Superbike Championship while Chris Burns' future is also in doubt after a trying campaign with Harris WCM.
However, Harris WCM have signed up Briton James Ellison for next year.
