McWilliams waits and hopes
Jeremy McWilliams
Jeremy McWilliams is still debating his future with Aprilia
Jeremy McWilliams could still be riding for the Aprilia factory team next year.

The crisis-hit Italian manfacturer is believed to have been given assurances that its future on the world stage is safe and a new bike is being planned.

The Ulsterman has no contract for next season, but hopes that the a possible takeover of the Aprilia production by Piaggo will lead to development plans.

''The new bike's got potential, but that was meant to be for this year. I'd stay if they are serious,'' he said.

A takeover of the Aprilia production base by Piaggo is expected to be confirmed this weekend.

Aprilia had already promised a new version of the three-cylinder machine for next year.

McWilliams, now in the veteran stage at 40, said that he would be keen to continue.

''I would definitely be happy to stay if Aprilia were serious about having a go at it,'' he said.

''But we need to start developing it straight after the end of this season.''

McWilliams competes in the final round of the MotoGP season at Valencia at the weekend.
