Valentino Rossi moved to struggling Yamaha this season in search of a new challenge after three consecutive MotoGP titles with Honda. In an echo of Michael Schumacher's switch to Ferrari in 1996, Rossi was aiming to turn the sport's big under-achievers into world champions. The charming and likeable London-based Italian had a massive task on his hands, the team a lot of work to do. But he confounded expectations with a string of brilliant wins and the title.
