Byrne is the runaway leader of the British Superbike Championship |
Neil Hodgson must wait at least five weeks before wrapping up the World Superbike Championship after wildcard entrant Shane Byrne stole the show at Brands Hatch. Byrne, who leads the British Superbike Championship, won both races on Sunday while Hodgson could only manage second and fifth respectively.
The Superbike season now takes a five-week break before the resumption in Assen at the beginning of September.
Hodgson collected 31 points on Sunday to take him 140 points clear of his nearest challenger Ruben Xaus in the overall standings.
"I was a bit nervous before the start of the races because I was feeling the pressure," said Hodgson, Hodgson, whose runner-up position in the opening race clinched the manufacturers' title for Ducati Fila.
"When you've had such a bad week in qualifying you still have to go out and do it in the race and pass everyone when you are 11th on the grid.
"It was very hard work out there, really tough because there were lots of people I had to overtake.
"And it's very difficult to pass around this track because if you go under somebody on the brakes you can end up going wide and then they pass you back.
"So when you overtake you really have to try and make the bike stick."
Wild card Sean Emmett, who was later black-flagged for a jump start, had led into Paddock Hill Bend in the second race ahead of HM Plant Ducati's Chris Walker, Rizla Suzuki's John Reynolds and fellow wild card Byrne on the MonsterMob Ducati.
With 10 of the 25 laps gone, Byrne edged in front of Reynolds at the front with Walker in third though James Toseland, Xaus, Hodgson and Gregorio Lavilla were all in close contention.
But after Walker crashed out, Byrne went on secure his second victory by 0.539 seconds ahead of fellow Britons Reynolds and Toseland.
Earlier in the day, Byrne topped an all-British podium after winning the opening race by 5.799 seconds from Hodgson and third-placed Walker.
