MotoGP front-runner Max Biaggi is to quit the Yamaha team at the end of the season, fed up with a lack of competitiveness.

The Italian has been outpaced for the last two years by his arch-rival and compatriot Valentino Rossi, who races for Honda.

"I have had four years of great satisfaction at Yamaha but without being able to realise my dream of winning the world championship," Biaggi told the Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Although I would have been happy to stay after meeting the Yamaha management and having asked for certain guarantees, I realised that there no longer existed the conditions to continue."

Biaggi wants to do more winning

Biaggi said that he had not decided where to race next season, but the Gazzetta said that Honda and the new Ducati team were the favourites.

Ducati are switching to MotoGP from the World Superbike Championship with star rider Troy Bayliss next year.

The Reuters news agency quoted a Yamaha source saying that Biaggi's Spanish team-mate Carlos Checa would be staying with the team.

Biaggi made his name in 250cc winning three world titles with Aprilia before he moved up to 500cc with Honda in 1998.

He finished second in the championship with Honda and joined Yamaha in 1999.

He is third in the championship behind the Honda pair of Italian Valentino Rossi and Japan's Tohru Ukawa.
