McWilliams: Hoping for better
Jeremy McWilliams retired from the last MotoGP in Italy
McWilliams has had a disappointing season so far
BBC Sport Online columnist Jeremy McWilliams hopes better tyres and a new chassis will boost his MotoGP challenge at Catalunya

After Mugello, we had a bit of a party which lightened things a bit after a disappointing day.

I then spent three days relaxing in Italy which I enjoyed very much and that has helped to recharge the batteries a bit.

The tyres were a major problem in Italy but since then we have had meetings with Bridgestone and they have given us more reassurances.

They are giving us new front and rear rubber for Barcelona and hopefully things will improve.

We have a new version of the chassis in the pipeline and there will have to be a decision made as to whether we use it this weekend.

Reaching the end of the race must be our priority

The team seem confident that it will improve things and after testing it, I am keen that it should be ready as soon as possible.

It should be easier on the tyres over a race distance which is where we have been encountering most of our problems.

We have proved our capabilities in qualification but reaching the end of the race must be our priority.

We also had a crank problem at Mugello so we must find out what went wrong there.

Once again we have a long straight to contend with at Catalunya and we are inevitably going to be playing catch-up in the turns once again to make up time.

I would not be keen on racing there in the wet on Sunday
The trend for most of the season has been that we are about 20th fastest on the long straights but classified in the top three through most of the twisty sections.

There is not much character or technique involved in Catalunya and it can be very tricky if it rains.

I have bad memories of crashing there in 2000 and while the rain usually suits us, I would not be keen on racing there in the wet on Sunday.

The last section is terribly treacherous and I'd predict that only half the field would finish.

On this occasion, I am hoping for dry weather!
