"After being the creme de la creme of racing teams in the 1980s and 1990s, Williams are locked in the second division.

"We saw a step forward from Williams at the European Grand Prix - and they went on to raise their game.

"Once it emerged that Williams needed a driver with money, the competition between Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hulkenberg for bragging rights emerged and Hulkenberg capped his season with a great pole position in Brazil.

"Williams might not have the out-and-out raw pace but in the end they did a solid job and nicked sixth place in the constructors' championship from Force India."

What is F1's biggest challenge?

It was its credibility in the light of climate change and the excessive use of fossil fuels. That black cloud seems to be dissipating now, however, as we work hard at making the sport sustainable.

Over the past few years, there have been a number of useful and interesting technical spin offs from F1, namely KERS and the on-going use of advanced aerodynamic materials. As a sport, we always have to keep working at ensuring we provide an outstanding and unique spectacle for the fans as well.

Does F1 need road-car manufacturers?

I think so because they bring prestige and funding into the sport, even if for their own teams, it still spreads. They also raise the bar and [force] other teams to excel.

Will having more teams on the grid make F1 more competitive?

Theoretically yes. It won't do F1 any damage. But it doesn't mean the racing will be any better as I imagine they might struggle to keep up with the established teams for the first year. It is still a good, fresh crop of talent coming in to challenge the old boys, and that's healthy.

Will non-refuelling change Formula 1 for the better or worse?

It all depends really on how well matched the teams are in terms of competitiveness. If there's a battle between Williams and McLaren, let's say, then it will bring real value.
