Button and Vettel overtake Kubica but on lap 16 the Red Bull driver smashes into the Briton coming into the Bus Stop chicane. The incident puts Button out of the race and leads to a drive-through penalty for Vettel
Hamilton takes advantage of the now dry conditions to gain a 12-second lead over Kubica but as the rain starts to fall again there is further drama, his slick tyres have no grip and he slides off into the gravel at Rivage
The moisture forces a host of cars into the pits and a rare mistake from Kubica, when the Pole overshoots his pit box, gifts Webber the chance to come out ahead of him and into second
The rain continues to fall and the conditions claim championship contender Alonso, who drives over the paint coming out of Malmedy and smashes into the barrier - coming to rest in the middle of the track
The incident brings out the safety car to bring the pack back up to Hamilton again, leaving the McLaren driver with only four laps to defend his lead
To the Briton's relief, there are no further incidents and the 25-year-old manages to keep his Australian rival behind him for his third victory of the season
Hamilton now leads Webber in the driver standings by just three points with only six races of the season left to run. "It almost feels like this is my first win," he says. "It's just phenomenal."
Hamilton's victory means that McLaren are now only three points behind Red Bull in the constructors' title race
