Ah, the old and the young. Seven-times world champion Michael Schumacher poses with team-mate and upstart Nico Rosberg on the morning of race day in Bahrain, as the 2010 Formula 1 season finally explodes to life
At the other end of the grid, Sunday is a huge day for three teams making their F1 debut. Well - debut may be a strong word. Lotus, represented by Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen, are back for the first time since 1994
"So you're eighth, and you're where? Seventh?" - Lewis Hamilton, 2008 world champion, entertains McLaren team-mate and defending champion Jenson Button and Schumacher at a pre-race photocall
And these, ladies and gentlemen, are your 2010 season Formula 1 drivers. Several clearly faced a shades-or-no-shades dilemma in the Bahrain sun
Here are two of your main men. Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel (middle), whose flying lap shocked Ferrari, is on pole. On the right, Ferrari's Felipe Massa, second-fastest. Vettel's team-mate Mark Webber (left) starts sixth
The lights go out and the first race of the year begins. Vettel gets an excellent start through the first corner, as Fernando Alonso expertly moves through around the outside of team-mate Massa into second
Mark Webber makes life a tad difficult for those lower down the grid as oily smoke billows from the rear of his Red Bull, but the Australian shakes it off and carries on regardless, dropping a couple of places
Meanwhile, back in Germany... - Hundreds of Schumacher fans pack into his home town hall in western Germany. Schumacher isn't setting the world alight in the early stages but they appear not to care
Vettel immediately sets about the task of increasing the gap between his Red Bull and Alonso's Ferrari, and maintains a lead of more than two seconds throughout the first half of the race
Trouble, though, for Vettel as the race wears on and a suspected exhaust failure clips his Red Bull's wings. Alonso and Massa take full advantage and surge ahead
With Vettel out of the equation and languishing back in fourth, Alonso strolls to a dream victory on his long-awaited Ferrari debut
Hamilton capitalises on Vettel's troubles to reach the podium, finishing third behind the Ferrari duo, but McLaren team-mate Button can only manage seventh
Schumacher re-emerges from his Mercedes to a post-race feeling he has not enjoyed in several years - but whether he's enjoying this one, having finished sixth, is open to debate. He tells BBC Sport it was "fun"
You know the feeling. After a hard day's work, sling the Bahrain Grand Prix trophy over your shoulder and head off home... - Alonso, victorious, leaves the podium with his spoils
Lugging the trophy off the podium is a pipe dream for drivers making their F1 debuts in Bahrain. Virgin's Lucas di Grassi gazes wistfully from the sidelines after exiting just two laps into the race
