Hamilton says McLaren have not given up on their 2009 car
World champion Lewis Hamilton insists he can salvage something from McLaren's difficult start to the season. After setting Friday's fastest second practice time at the Nurburgring a bullish Hamilton predicted a brighter future for the McLaren MP4-24. "The great thing is that we haven't given up," he told BBC Sport. "We haven't moved on to next year's car. "This team wants to win, we haven't forgotten how to win and we miss it. We are trying everything to get there." "Whether it's the last race of the season, or the next race, or whatever, as long as we get a podium or whatever it is, as long as we do get there it will be worth it - and I believe we can." | 606: DEBATE The Legend that is PhilSlocombe |
McLaren introduced several new parts for the home race of their German engine suppliers and sponsors Mercedes as Hamilton ran with a new front wing, diffuser and top bodywork. "We managed to make a couple of set-up changes and it seemed to help a little bit," said Hamilton. "But we can't underestimate the pace of the other guys, we may be in the top 10 and if we are that will be a fantastic job by the guys in the team. "It's good to come to the race and feel a small step forward, it's encouraging when you get out there and you feel a little bit more energetic, it's good. "It feels more like a race car for sure and it's not really felt much like a race car all year. But it's still sliding a lot, it's not feeling like last year's car, clearly, but it is a step forward. "This is a result of all the hard work from the guys and I know they are all exhausted but to come to a circuit and take a step in the right direction, for sure they must be very proud - this is a result of all the hard work from the guys. "I am just trying to enjoy it, trying to remain positive, trying to improve, because there are lots of areas where I can still improve; I am not perfect, nobody is perfect. "But it's just great to be working with these guys and giving them as much feedback as possible, I love working with them, what else can I say?"
