Jenson Button makes the most of his pole position by getting away cleanly in Melbourne but there is plenty of incident behind him As Button pulls away, the rest of the field fight for position, Rubens Barrichello drops from second to seventh after a terrible start The silver and red McLaren of Heikki Kovalainen touches the Red Bull of Mark Webber and both are out of contention at the first corner Nick Heidfeld in the BMW and Fernando Alonso's Renault are also on the gravel during an incident-packed start to the Australian Grand Prix Button opens a four-second lead by lap four with Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari's Felipe Massa closing in Poland's Robert Kubica is also in the hunt gambling on super-soft tyres on his BMW Sauber from the start Instructed to hurry-up, Nico Rosberg overtakes Kimi Raikkonen, only for a 21-second pit stop soon after to push the German back to 11th Button pits but gets out again in front, with a lapped car between him and the pack, as the safety car comes out, laps 19-23 Kubica, posts the fastest lap of the race, pits and returns behind sixth-placed Lewis Hamilton, himself breathing down Rosberg's neck Pit stops mix up the race order once more, and Rosberg posts a new fastest lap, chasing Kubica and Vettel who fight for second place Vettel and Kubica, battling behind Button, collide with only three laps left, wiping out both cars despite the German's attempt to continue The crash docks Vettel 10 places at the next race, brings out the safety car, sees Barrichello go second and Hamilton go fourth Jarno Trulli starts in the pits but rises to third place, only to be handed a 25-second penalty for overtaking behind the safety car Button crosses the line to win the Australian Grand Prix and seal a memorable weekend for him and the whole Brawn GP team Barrichello completes and celebrates a Brawn GP one-two, owing as much to other team's performances as their own diffusers Victory is sweet for Button, who now looks like he finally has a car to show what he is really capable of
