Fernando Alonso is a double world champion |
Renault driver Fernando Alonso has dismissed rumours linking him with rival Formula One team Honda. Alonso, a double world champion, has been linked with a move to Honda for the 2009 season. "Nothing is happening at all. I am not thinking of next year and will not until the end of the season," he said. "I am not talking to anyone now at all. I am fully focused on this year's championship and I am not worried about next year." Alonso was speaking ahead of Sunday's inaugural street race in Valencia this weekend. | 606: DEBATE |
Renault team boss Flavio Briatore is keen to keep hold of his star driver and has vowed to deliver a car that will persuade Alonso to stay. Honda driver Rubens Barrichello, who is keen to extend his stay beyond his contract expiring at the end of the season, says his team are in talks with Alonso. "I think the team is definitely talking to Fernando but that's the question mark," he said. "I have never been so enthusiastic about my whole situation with the team. "I left Ferrari because I didn't have the freedom to do what I wanted to do. I have that at Honda, but I still have not had the car to perform and I am waiting for that chance." Fellow Honda driver Jenson Button is also not assured of his drive next season but is confident in his own position. He said: "In a way, it's good the team are talking to someone like Alonso who has a lot of experience, and with good teams. "They are going to talk to other drivers, that's only natural. But I'm very happy with my position within the team." He added: "I'm not worried about myself."
