Trulli says the McLaren duo had a lucky escape

McLaren were fined $100m and stripped of their constructors championship points over the row but their drivers escaped any individual penalty.

"If you disqualify a team you should probably disqualify them too - they all work for the team," he said.

"The sport has been hit hard by this all around the world. It's suffered."

Hamilton leads Alonso by two points at the top of the championship standings, with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen in third place, 13 points adrift.

The decision to strip McLaren of their constructors' championship points handed the title to Ferrari.

Trulli's Toyota team-mate Ralf Schumacher said it would have been excessive to take action against the drivers as well as the team, and would also have made a mockery of the title race.

"It would be unfair," he said.

"It's always arguable but I think for the championship it's important that everything stays as it is.

"The drivers are not really involved in the development of the car.

"I don't know about the other drivers but for myself, and the people I've talked to, they should not be punished."
