Hamilton and Alonso have spoken since Sunday's race

"We are not drivers at war, as has been widely reported," the Briton said in a statement released on Thursday.

"Although we did not speak on Sunday, we have spoken a few times since the weekend and we continue to have a professional working relationship.

"In fact, Fernando and I plan to meet up over the (August) holiday period."

The 22-year-old, who leads Alonso by seven points in the drivers' standings, added: "For the record, Fernando and I are fiercely competitive and respectful of each other. We are both ambitious drivers who want to win."

Hamilton is in his debut season but has confounded expectations to lead reigning champion Alonso in the title race.

Their already strained relationship was reported to have broken down completely at the Hungarian Grand Prix at the weekend, at which Alonso was relegated to sixth place on the grid for blocking Hamilton in qualifying.

Hamilton went on to win the race, with Alonso coming home fourth.

"As an individual in my first year in Formula One, I have done my utmost to conduct myself in a professional and open manner," said Hamilton.

"Of course, I have made mistakes, not least during the last weekend. Those are open to public scrutiny.

"I have my own regrets and have dealt with matters arising."

Earlier, former world champion Mika Hakkinen said Spaniard Alonso was to blame for the apparent rift.

"Alonso can't accept such strong competition from a novice," said Hakkinen, who won two world titles for McLaren in 1998 and 1999.

"Hamilton has already caused him a number of worries, something that Fernando is struggling to accept."

But Hakkinen believes team boss Ron Dennis is the right person to resolve the problem.
