Alonso success delights McLaren
Fernando Alonso
Alonso left his rivals trailing at Silverstone
McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh says the team's decision to sign Fernando Alonso is looking increasingly inspired.

The Spaniard, 25, who joins McLaren next season, is currently in dominant form for Renault and looks set to defend his F1 drivers' title.

Whitmarsh said: "I think he's a better driver now compared to when we signed him (in December). We are very happy with the progress he has made.

"Fernando's consistency is astounding and he has grown in stature."

The McLaren chief executive added: "We have mixed feelings about how well Fernando is driving at the moment.

"He was never one for making a lot of mistakes, but his performance this year has been quite incredible.

"It may not feel pleasant now but we are hoping it will feel pleasant this time next year."

Alonso, who won the British Grand Prix on Sunday, leads the drivers' standings by 23 points from Ferrari's Michael Schumacher.

McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen is a massive 41 points behind Alonso in third, with team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya another seven adrift in fifth.
