Coulthard finished third in Monaco a fortnight ago

The Scot accused Montoya of blocking him during the session and likened the Colombian to a chimpanzee in a zoo.

"He came and apologised this morning. It was nice," Montoya said after Sunday's race at Silverstone.

Coulthard had complained about the qualifying incident but race officials decided not to take any action.

Montoya, who replaced Coulthard at McLaren at the end of 2004, said the Scot had told him he slowed in the second qualifying session because he did not trust the Colombian to move out of the way.

"I said 'you haven't even talked to me in six years I've been here (in Formula One) so it's hard to say why you don't even trust me if I've never done anything to you'," said Montoya, who finished sixth in the race proper.

"I was coming into the pits as he was starting his lap and he was never close enough for me to pick up the pace. I went through the gravel, stayed right and went into the pits.

"He said he had to back off to make sure I didn't screw his lap, but I wasn't planning to."

Montoya blamed Sauber driver Jacques Villeneuve for a clash at the start of Sunday's race, which damaged his McLaren and left him with a headache.

"It was a big shame that Villeneuve lost control and hit the side of my car as we were coming into the first corner at the start as our strategy would have seen us have a much stronger race," said Montoya.

"The impact created a big hole in the sidepod and consequently I struggled a bit with the balance throughout the race."

But the Canadian protested his innocence over the clash.

"It was a racing incident. I was on the inside and he was following another car on the outside. He came across the track but couldn't see I was there," he said.

"I locked my wheels and ran into him but luckily there was no damage to me."
