Massa is in his first season as a Ferrari race driver

Felipe Massa will lose 10 places on the grid for the Malaysian Grand Prix after his Ferrari's engine was replaced.

Under current F1 rules, an engine has to last for two races, but Ferrari said Massa would be using a new one for Sunday's race at the Sepang circuit.

Massa qualified second for last week's Bahrain GP but could only finish ninth.

Red Bull's David Coulthard, who will also have a new engine and be penalised, said the rule, introduced to cut costs, should be reviewed.

He claimed it works against the principle of grand prix racing and encourages drivers to retire from races.

"I have consistently said that (we should) take away this handicap formula as much as possible," he said.

"This should be about the fastest cars, the guys who have done the best job during an individual grand prix weekend.

"If I had stopped just before the chequered flag I wouldn't have had a penalty here. But because I crossed the line - 10th place, no points - I get a penalty."
