Jenson Button said an incorrect tyre choice restricted him to fifth place in the Hungarian Grand Prix. Button's BAR team chose the harder of their two Michelin tyres in contrast to most of their rivals, but they proved less suited to the heat than expected.
Button said: "The car was running quite well and considering that our tyre choice did not work for this race I am pleased to finish fifth.
"We are moving up the championship and getting closer to where we want to be."
BAR failed to score any points in the first nine races of the season.
Their car proved uncompetitive initially, and then they were disqualified from the San Marino Grand Prix and banned for two subsequent races for running an underweight car.
But Button has been in the points at every race since finishing fourth in France at the beginning of this month and BAR are now seventh in the constructors' championship, just four points behind sixth-placed Sauber. There was further good news for BAR in Hungary when Button's team-mate Takuma Sato scored his first point of a disappointing season by finishing eighth.
BAR sporting director Gil de Ferran said: "It is good to have both cars finishing in the points yet again and demonstrating a strong, reliable package.
"However, we believe that we made the wrong choice on tyres and, as a result, we were far slower than we predicted during the race and were unable to fight for the podium position we were hoping for."
