Lap 70: Alonso cruises to the French Grand Prix - his fifth of the season. Having begun the race on pole, he wins at Magny-Cours by over 11 seconds. Ferrari's Michael Schumacher finishes third.

Lap 68: Alonso is 17 seconds ahead of Raikkonen, who is 53 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher.

Lap 65: Toyota's Trulli is only five seconds behind fourth-placed Button.

Lap 63: It appears unlikely Button will be able to snatch a podium spot from third-placed Schumacher, who is 13 seconds ahead.

Lap 61: Button moves up to fourth because of Fisichella's problem pit stop. Alonso has an 18-second lead over Raikkonen.

Lap 59: Fisichella pits, and then stalls. The Renault pit team manage to re-start the car.

Lap 58: Alonso makes his final pit stop (5.8 seconds) and comes out in the lead.

Lap 54: With 16 laps to go Alonso has a 12-second lead over Raikkonen.

Lap 51 Michael Schumacher makes his third stop.

Lap 50 Alonso has a 12-second lead over Raikkonen in second. Michael Schumacher is third, 25 seconds behind the leader. Briton Button moves up to fifth in his BAR.

Lap 48: Montoya pulls out of the Grand Prix because of engine problems - his first retirement of the season.

Lap 43: Leader Alonso is 14 seconds ahead of second-placed Raikkonen in his McLaren. Montoya seems to have something wrong with is car, he is 25 seconds behind Alonso.

Lap 42: Alonso, who had a 33-second lead, comes into the pits and exits speedily, much to the relief of Renault chief Flavio Briatore.

Lap 40: Barrichello guides his Ferrari into the pits for his second stop. Minardi's Christijan Albers also spins out - both cars are out.

Lap 38: Alonso extends his lead to 33 seconds over McLaren's flying Finn, Raikkonen.

Lap 36: Minardi's Patrick Freisacher spins off and is out of the Grand Prix.

Lap 34: Michael Schumacher and Sato come in for their second stops. Schumcaher has a three-second lead over Trulli in fifth.

Lap 32: All the eight top drivers have made one stop. Alonso has a 29-second lead over the McLarens of Raikkonen and Montoya.

Lap 29: Raikkonen finally comes into the pits, but exits in quick time to rejoin in second spot. Both he and Montoya have stopped and are putting pressure leader Alonso.

Lap 26: Leader Alonso holds a nine-second lead over Raikkonen, who still has not stopped for fuel.

Lap 23:Alonso has an eight-second lead. Second-placed Raikkonen, who has yet to come into the pits, has a 19-second lead over Schumacher in third.

Lap 20: Alonso, who had a 29-second advantage, comes into the pits and exits without any problems.

Lap 18: Trulli and Michael Schumacher take their first pit stops. The Ferrari of Schumacher blazes out after a great stop.

Lap 14: Sato goes into the pits for his first stop.

Lap 10: Spaniard Alonso looks set for another Grand Prix win. He has already established a 14-second lead.

Lap 7: Coulthard is in 15th spot in his Red Bull - 31 seconds off the pace.

Lap 6: Alonso has a 10-second lead over the field.

Lap 5: Three seconds separates Schumacher, Barrichello and Trulli in second.

Lap 4: Alonso now has a seven-second lead over Trulli. Button drops down to eighth.

Lap 3: Second-placed Trulli has just under a second lead over Michael Schumacher. Alonso extends his lead over Trulli to four seconds.

Lap 2: Alonso leads second-placed Trulli by three seconds.

Lap 1: Alonso gets away cleanly. Sato moves down from fourth to fifth. The Red Bull cars move up the field. Klein is out of the Grand Prix.

1259: The drivers begin their parade lap. The belief at Magny-Cours is that the top drivers will be on a two-stop strategy.

1256: The drivers have entered their cars and are set for their parade lap. The track temperature reaches 51C degrees.

1248 BST: Christian Klein, who begins 16th on the grid for Red Bull, opts to wear a cooling vest for the race. It promises to be a hot one.

1245 BST: The weather at Magny-Cours is dry and hot, the track temperature is 49C degrees.

There are Renault flags draped around the arena, with fans of the French manufacturer hoping that championship leader Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella can come home one and two.
