Ralf criticised Michael for trying to edge between him and a concrete wall.

"He's crazy. He should have switched on his brain before trying a move like that. Another millimetre and one of us could have been dead," Ralf said on TV.

But Michael hit back, saying: "I was only six-hundredths of a second behind Ralf and my attack was acceptable."

The champion added: "I am a full-blooded racer. We're not on a Sunday outing."

Michael was left rueing his luck after a difficult weekend for Ferrari.

He finished seventh after being caught in a crash on lap 24 and then coming out just behind the safety car from the resulting pit stop.

The defending world champion said: "Everything that could go wrong seemed to go wrong at the beginning.

"I got stuck behind the Minardi that blocked the track and I had to change the nose on the car."

The incident happened when Christijan Albers spun, blocking much of the track.

It caused David Coulthard to come to a halt and an unsighted Schumacher subsequently ploughed into the Scot's car.

Schumacher immediately headed for the pits only to see the safety car come round before his exit from the pit lane, therefore leaving him already a lap behind eventual race winner Kimi Raikkonen.

"Given everything that happened I have to be reasonably happy with my two points," added Schumacher.

Technical director Ross Brawn said: "It was a frustrating afternoon because you could see in the middle of the race that our car had huge potential.

"Michael set the fastest lap when he still had a lot of fuel in the car.

"But this was typical of the type of race you can expect to have at this circuit if you do not qualify well. We had to follow other cars and we could not use the pace that we had."

Schumacher's team-mate Rubens Barrichello had another poor weekend. His Ferrari stalled on his second visit to the pits and he was brought in for a 10-second penalty after speeding in the pit lane.
