Alonso has three victories to his credit already this season |
Championship leader Fernando Alonso is confident he can retain his advantage in Monaco this week, despite conceding McLaren have a better car. McLaren have improved noticeably in the last two races, and Kimi Raikkonen easily beat Alonso to win in Barcelona.
"I think at the moment McLaren are a little bit in front of us in terms of competitiveness," Alonso said.
"It is normal that there will be races where they are more competitive but I'm very confident in myself and the team."
The intricate street circuit at Monaco is unlike any other on the calendar, and that is a fact not lost on the Spaniard.
"It is a very special track but a good car does not always win in Monaco," he said.
"Last year we saw Ferrari dominate the whole championship but here in Monaco they were not quick enough to win the race. We know the McLaren is quick but here is always very special.
"I hope to win the race here because it is a very special race for the drivers and for the history of Formula One. Winning in Monte Carlo is something more than winning in another place."
