 Stewart is determined to stay on as BRDC president |
The board of the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) has voted to back Sir Jackie Stewart in his fight to remain as the club's president. A group of members led by former chairman Ray Bellm are trying to remove him after a BRDC members' poll called for Stewart to be axed.
Stewart faces a motion calling for his removal at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) next month.
He insisted the poll was unofficial and did not reflect members' true opinions.
"The EGM is the culmination of a very public campaign against me," said Stewart.
"I have kept my counsel until now because I don't think it's correct and proper for a board member to give out confidential information."

Stewart says he is confident that BRDC members want him to continue in his role. "This campaign, this straw poll that was held was unofficial," he said.
"The copy that was sent out with the letter was ridiculous. The members who voted on this were not given a balanced account of the facts.
"Therefore it drew a very unusual response from some members.
"I am very pleased to hold an extraordinary general meeting to answer this whispering campaign. I will write to all the members accordingly."
Stewart also denied Bellm's suggestions that he was personally behind the former chairman's departure.
Bellm was ousted as BRDC chairman in January.
"It is the board's prerogative to vote a chairman in or take him out. That happened and he's obviously very upset."
