Ferrari will give their new F2005 car its debut at next week's Bahrain Grand Prix - two races ahead of schedule. The Formula One champions announced the decision after Michael Schumacher drove the car for the first time at the Mugello circuit on Wednesday.
Ferrari are struggling after Renault won the first two races of the season in Australia and Malaysia.
Seven-times world champion Schumacher, winner of 13 of last year's 18 races, has just two points so far this season.
Ferrari team boss Jean Todt said: "The tests at Mugello confirmed the car's capability.
"We will have two F2005s, one for each driver, and one F2004 that was used in Australia and Malaysia as a back-up."
Earlier this week, Schumacher's team-mate Rubens Barrichello said the new car was "definitely quicker" than the updated 2004 model the team have been using.
The Brazilian had to cut short his test at Mugello after sensing an engine problem but declared the F2005 "represents a step forward in every area".
Also this week, Ferrari's tyre suppliers Bridgestone shouldered the burden of responsibility for the team's poor showing in Malaysia.
Championship pacesetters Renault use Michelin tyres.
