Raikkonen was second fastest before his heavy accident |
McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen will sit out testing on Wednesday after bruising his thumb in a 140mph crash at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya on Tuesday. Raikkonen lost control when a wheel failed at the second-last corner.
"We think a foreign body got jammed between the brake caliper and the wheel rim, machining a groove that caused an immediate failure," said a spokeswoman.
Witnesses said the car snapped across the track, hit the barriers heavily and spun to a halt in the pitlane entrance.
The Finn, who had set the second fastest time of the day behind Renault's Fernando Alonso, was checked over at the circuit's medical centre before being released.
"I don't really know what happened. It was quite a big impact and I'm a bit shaken up and have hurt my thumb," Raikkonen said.
McLaren said they hoped to have Raikkonen's car repaired on Wednesday, with Spanish test driver Pedro de la Rosa taking over his duties.
Raikkonen's team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya was four fastest at the test, just over 0.1secs slower than the Finn.
Toyota test driver Ricardo Zonta was third, while Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella and Red Bull's David Coulthard were next up after Montoya.
Michael Schumacher's Ferrari was 10th fastest, behind Vitantonio Liuzzi of Red Bull, Williams driver Mark Webber, and Toyota's Jarno Trulli.
