India 'to host GP in three years'

Ecclestone says India will soon join the Formula One schedule

Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has told the BBC that he expects India to host a Grand Prix within three years.

Ecclestone told the 10 o'clock News India would "definitely" have a race, "it's just a case of where".

Calcutta (Kolkata) and Hyderabad have both been linked with a Grand Prix in the past, but Ecclestone said it would "probably end up" in Mumbai (Bombay).

India will have its first Grand Prix driver this year after Narain Karthikeyan joined the Jordan team.

The 28-year-old from Chennai has been given the drive because he has substantial sponsorship funds behind him.

New Jordan owner Alex Shnaider, a Canadian steel billionaire, is also hoping the presence of an Indian driver in his team will help build new business contacts on the subcontinent.

But Karthiketan is hoping to prove he is good enough for a permanent place in F1.
