Toyota's 2005 car is the first to be produced fully under the supervision of highly-rated design boss Mike Gascoyne.

"We are confident with the work that we've done," Gascoyne said at the car's launch on Saturday.

"Everyone in Toyota knows we've made a much better car than before. How good it is, you'll have to wait and see."

Gascoyne has established a strong reputation in F1 after turning first Jordan, who he joined from now-defunct Tyrrell in 1998, and then Renault into winners.

Toyota took him on to spearhead their attempt to set up a team that can challenge for the world title.

"We're not supposed to make predictions but since I went to Tyrrell this is the first team I've been at that within 12months we haven't scored a podium," he said.

"So personally, I think I need to put that right as soon as possible."

Gascoyne, who is reputed to be earning a salary in the region of �3.5m, has already admitted that the team are under pressure to perform in 2005.

Toyota, who are believed to have the biggest budget in F1 after Ferrari, have yet to finish on the podium in 51 races since making their debut in 2002.

And team boss Tsutomu Tomita said on Saturday that he had been "very disappointed and frustrated with 2004", when they were eighth of the 10 teams.

Tomita said: "Our ultimate goal is to win in F1, but we know it takes time.

"Our target with the TF105 is to make an important step on our way to victory."
