Trulli took Toyota's first pole position in F1 |
Jarno Trulli earned Toyota's first ever pole position by holding off Kimi Raikkonen's challenge in qualifying for the US Grand Prix. Trulli was 0.069 seconds faster than the McLaren driver, with BAR's Jenson Button in third place.
Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella earned fourth place on the grid for Sunday's race in Indianapolis.
Ferrari's Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello came in fifth and seventh, either side of Fernando Alonso.
Juan Pablo Montoya, forced to start early after being disqualified in Canada, came home 11th, well ahead of David Coulthard, who had a miserable day, finishing 16th fastest.
Schumacher's crash gave Toyota test driver Ricardo Zonta a rare outing, and he claimed an admirable 13th-place finish.
Trulli admitted it was hard to celebrate winning Toyota's first pole after Schumacher's smash.
Zonta also crashed in Friday's session and Trulli said: "It has been a difficult time for everybody here, especially us.
"We came here with a lot of expectation and then had two crashes. We've had a weekend of mixed emotions up to now."
