Schumacher has every reason to smile, says Montoya

Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya fears that Ferrari could win every remaining Grand Prix this season.

Michael Schumacher has won nine of the 10 races so far and Montoya expects him to continue his success at this weekend's British Grand Prix.

"It looks like a red-wash. Ferrari look very strong now," Montoya said.

"Ferrari did a really good job this year with the car and the tyres because at the end of last season they were going backwards."

But the Colombian said that things could turn around if Ferrari's pursuers could put the Italian team under a little more pressure.

"They've not been pushed yet. Michael cruises half the race - he gets ahead and then can back off," Montoya said.

"If he had to push all the way, you might see the Ferrari failing."

Ferrari's rivals have also been criticised for not grasping what few opportunities they do have by making errors at crucial times.

Last weekend's French Grand Prix was a case in point, when Montoya was one of several drivers who made mistakes on their qualifying lap when they were on course to beat Schumacher's time.

But Montoya said these errors were happening because the drivers were having to push beyond the limits of their machinery in an attempt to keep up with the Ferrari.

"Our cars are not quick enough, it's as simple as that," he said. "And when the car's not quick enough, you push it and mistakes come."

Montoya said his Williams team were optimistic of an improved performance at Silverstone.

Montoya has not been able to keep up with the Ferraris this season

"We made a major improvement on set-up at the last test at Silverstone and we looked pretty competitive on the long runs," he said.

"With the new aerodynamic bits that we had at the last race, we should be even faster."

Montoya dismissed suggestions that no-one would beat Schumacher to the championship for as long as he remained racing.

The Colombian pointed to last season, when Schumacher only narrowly pipped himself and McLaren driver Kimi Raikkonen at the end of the season.

Montoya is joining McLaren as Raikkonen's team-mate in 2005.
