Gene has previous racing experience with Minardi |
Williams test driver Marc Gene is confident the French Grand Prix could be his big break into Formula One. The Spaniard will replace the injured Ralf Schumacher at Magny-Cours and knows a good display will enhance his claims for a drive next season.
Williams are searching for two new drivers for 2005, with both Schumacher and Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya leaving at the end of the season.
"The fact that they've picked me means I am high up the list," said Gene.
Although Williams have only confirmed Gene for Magny-Cours, he has the perfect opportunity to stake his claim for one of the two prized driving spots.
"I'm going to try not to think beyond Magny-Cours because that would put me under pressure and I don't want that," said the 30-year-old.
"I would be surprised if they judge me this weekend. I don't think it would be right to judge people on one race.
"I'm one of the possibilities and the fact that I'm racing this weekend shows that."
