"I'm so happy. I have been waiting so long to win and it came at the best race in Monaco," said the Italian.

"I was just doing what I had to do and just responding to the lap times and there was no point taking any risks.

"I'm so happy for me and so happy for the Renault team. It has been a faultless weekend and it is the best way to win - being on top all weekend."

Trulli was helped by the retirements of Renault team-mate Fernando Alonso and Ferrari's Michael Schumacher as he collected his first win in 117 starts.

Both drivers crashed out after separate incidents in the tunnel involving Williams pair Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya.

But Trulli was given a nervy time by BAR's Jenson Button, who produced a late charge to finish less than half a second behind him.

"I didn't get a good start and then it was really tough. The traffic was so tough," said Button.

"I know you can't overtake here but I had to give everything I possibly could.

"I had the chance of hitting a guardrail but I want to win so much I had to push."

Ferrari blame Montoya

The only consolation for Ferrari was Rubens Barrichello's third place.

"I was very lucky to finish the race," said Barrichello.

"There was a point when the wheels started to lock and when the safety car came in I had the chance to see if there was something wrong.

"I just had to go round and round to finish the race - I couldn't push at all."
