Lap 56: Button holds Raikkonen off on the long back straight as Rubens Barrichello takes the chequered flag to win the first-ever Chinese Grand Prix and registers back-to-back victories for the first time in his career. Michael Schumacher sets the fastest lap of the race but can only manage 12th place.
Lap 55: Button is responding well to Raikkonen's challenge and is so far holding the Finn off.
Lap 53: Raikkonen sets his fastest lap of the race and is just 1.5 seconds behind Button.
Lap 52: It looks like being an exciting conclusion to the 56-lap race as just six seconds separate the leading three drivers.
Lap 50: Button has cut Barrichello's lead to five seconds but Raikkonen is catching Button. He is now just 2.5 seconds behind the Briton.
Lap 47: Michael Schumacher, who had been having a scrap with Villeneuve for 11th place, pits for the fourth time of the afternoon. It is a "splash and dash" stop to give him just enough fuel to get him to the end of the race.
Lap 44: Barrichello is eight seconds ahead of Button. It looks as if the British driver will have to settle for second but the result would be a real boost for BAR in their fight with Renault for second place in the constructors' championship.
Lap 42: Barrichello pits for a third time - it is a quick stop and he comes out ahead of Button.
Lap 39: Ralf Schumacher retires after the damage caused to his rear suspension by the collision with Coulthard.
Lap 37: Ralf Schumacher spins twice on one lap. He goes into the pits but it appears the Williams team were not expecting him. Coulthard punctures after a brush with Ralf Schumacher but luckily is quite near the pits and was due to stop anyway.
Lap 35: Button pits. Michael Schumacher has a puncture in his left rear tyre. His chances of scoring points in the first ever Chinese Grand Prix have vanished as he limps into the pits for a change of tyre.
Lap 32: Button leads by eight seconds and is yet to make his second stop. It looks as if the Briton may have opted for a two-stop strategy, which might explain his slowing up in the middle of the race. Schumacher is in 12th but can't get past Villeneuve.
Lap 28: Barrichello makes the most of Raikkonen's pit-stop, putting in a fast lap before pitting himself.
Lap 27: Barrichello is beginning to pull away slightly from Raikkonen as the latter pits for a light load of fuel.
Lap 24: As has happened in previous Grands Prix, Button's BAR does not appear to have much pace in the middle of the race and he is losing time on the leading pair.
Lap 22: Barrichello is still less than a second ahead of Raikkonen. Button is 9.1 seconds behind the McLaren but is a good 10 seconds ahead of Alonso in fourth.
Lap 20: Michael Schumacher pits and emerges back in 14th place.
Lap 19: Michael Schumacher is flying through the field, making up half-a-second on each sector. He is in seventh place and has brother Ralf in his sights. Michael finally moves through on the back straight and cheekily waves at his brother as he overtakes.
Lap 16: Michael Schumacher spins on the back straight and drops down from ninth to 12th. But he immediately battles back and overtakes Coulthard.
Lap 14: Button, who had briefly led the race, pits but struggles to get away and loses time.
Lap 13: Michael Schumacher is benefitting from the pit-stops and is now in 10th.
Lap 12: Schumacher barges past Christian Klien on a tight bend and their two cars bump, leaving Klien's vehicle damaged. Barrichello and Raikkonen pit.
Lap 10: The leading three drivers are all lapping in pretty similar times. The first pit-stops are taking place, with Massa and Olivier Panis first to go in.
Lap eight: Button sets the fastest lap of the race so far but is four seconds adrift of Raikkonen. Michael Schumacher is 17th of the 20-strong field with all the cars that started the race still going.
Lap seven: Barrichello puts in a quick lap and it looks as if his tyres have bedded in. Button cleverly nips past Alonso so the Briton is now back to where he started on the grid.
Lap five: Massa's Sauber is struggling for speed and drops a couple more places on one corner. He is now seventh and just ahead of David Coulthard, with the Scot desperate to get past him.
Lap four: Michael Schumacher is clearly carrying a lot of fuel than his Ferrari team-mate as Barrichello, who is a second ahead of second-placed Kimi Raikkonen, is now 21 seconds ahead of the world champion.
Lap three: Button edges past Massa and can now attack Alonso in third.
Lap one: As the cars pull off the grid, Barrichello holds onto his lead but Jenson Button has a bad start and drops from third to fifth. Alonso makes a good start in his Renault and sneaks up to third. Michael Schumacher finishes lap one 16 seconds behind Barrichello.
0700: The drivers set off on their warm-up lap in front of a huge crowd of 150,000 spectators, with the exception of Michael Schumacher, who has elected to start from the pit-lane.
