Juan Pablo Montoya criticised race-winner Michael Schumacher after a controversial incident on the first lap of the San Marino Grand Prix.

Montoya said: "I went to pass him at the hairpin. I'm coming out beside him and the next thing I know he hits me hard enough to put me onto the grass.

"It's very disappointing to have racing like that and I will be surprised if he gets away with it."

Schumacher said: "Obviously I wanted to keep him behind me."

The incident happened at the Tosa hairpin as the two battled for second place behind Jenson Button.

Both men started badly, but Montoya recovered quicker and began pressuring Schumacher at the first of two chicanes on the run down to Tosa.

Montoya said: "Michael made a poor start and was slow out of the first chicane. I went to pass him but he closed the door and I had to back off.

"The same thing happened at the next chicane, so I went for the outside at Tosa.

"I understand he has to defend his position but how far can he be allowed to do this?

"He said he didn't see me, he didn't know I was there. He probably forgot to look. I got in front of him before Tosa. He didn't see me? He must be blind or stupid.

"Look at Indianapolis last year - there I was given a drive-through and that cost me the championship.

"I would be champion now - and he gets away with it. The rules are not fair. They should be for Ferrari and everyone else."

Schumacher said: "It was very slippery on my side and I was fighting with Juan.

"It was a bit difficult to keep him behind me. Obviously I wanted to avoid him getting by because I knew I was going to get faster once the first couple of laps got going."

Montoya then got embroiled in a controversy with team-mate Ralf Schumacher, who tried to overtake him on the hill after Tosa.

The Colombian pushed the German on to the grass in his attempts to hold him off.

"I closed the door and was able to hold him off," Montoya said.
