Ecclestone wants to see F1 become a more competitive sport |
Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone has backed proposals to bring former world champions Jacques Villeneuve and Mika Hakkinen back to the sport. Villeneuve and Hakkinen have both been linked with a return to the sport which has continued to be dominated by Ferrari and Michael Schumacher.
"Most of the fans want to see more exciting races and not such a long winning streak," said Ecclestone.
"Both these names, represent charisma and that's what we need."
Ecclestone added: "But when the fans look at what great racing was going on behind Michael - the four-way battle between Renault, BAR, Williams and McLaren - that was great stuff.
"
Villeneuve, world champion in 1997 with Williams, has been without a drive since losing his seat at BAR last season.
"Jacques was always fast and he should get a chance to prove that he's still got these skills," said Ecclestone
"If that were to happen it would benefit the sport, and the same is true for Mika."
Hakkinen, the last driver to finish above Michael Schumacher in the drivers' world title back in 1999, has been rumoured to have attracted interest from both Williams and BMW.
