Button is at the centre of a battle between BAR and Williams |
The row over Jenson Button's future edged closer to a resolution when Williams lodged their contract with the star for 2005 with Formula One chiefs. The contract recognition board already holds BAR's 2005 agreement with the Englishman, which was submitted before he announced his switch to Williams.
Button's decision led to both teams claiming they had the binding deal.
Now the CRB will have the final say as only drivers whose contracts are approved by them can compete in F1.
Button announced he had signed a two-year deal with Williams on 6 August.
The Briton, third in the F1 driver standings, said he felt a return to his former team would provide him with the "best platform" to become world champion.
The move stunned BAR boss Dave Richards, who had been delighted with Button's form during the current campaign.
Richards insisted their new contract with Button for 2005 had been approved at a team board meeting on 20 July.
However, Williams are also convinced their contract is legal after Button exercised an opt-out clause to leave BAR.
Williams also say they delayed submitting their contract until Monday in order to try and seek a peaceful resolution to the dispute without the need for a CRB judgement.
That, however, has not been possible.
