Schumacher crashes at the US Grand Prix |
Ralf Schumacher's chances of returning for the Italian Grand Prix rest on him getting the all-clear to drive - then proving to Williams he can do the job. The German has been out of action since breaking two vertebrae in a heavy accident at Indianapolis in June.
If he is given the go-ahead, he will take part in a four-day test at Monza two weeks before the 12 September race.
F1 doctor Sid Watkins said: "His medic will have to decide if he is fit then he'll have to complete a further test."
Schumacher had been expected to return last weekend in Hungary, but he extended his lay-off after being warned another similar accident could leave him paralysed.
Antonio Pizzonia will contest the Belgian Grand Prix in Schumacher's absence and would be on stand-by should he fail to recover in time for Italy.
