Renault have appointed former Cosworth chief engineer Rob White as their Formula One technical director in charge of engine matters. The Briton started work at the team's factory in Viry-Chatillon last week.
Team principal Flavio Briatore said: "His appointment is another key step as we build towards challenging for the world championship."
Renault finished fourth in the 2003 F1 constructors' championship and claimed victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix.
They have been revamping their operations after losing team technical director Mike Gascoyne to Toyota at the end of the 2003 season.
Gascoyne has been replaced by Briton Bob Bell at the Enstone factory in England, which designs the cars while the French base looks after engines.
Renault are abandoning their radical wide-angled engine in favour of a more conventional version for 2004 under new engine rules that limit teams to one per car per weekend.
