 | Ralf Schumacher is a title challenger after two wins in a row |
Ralf Schumacher has admitted for the first time that he believes he can win the Formula One world championship this season. The German's victory in the French Grand Prix on Sunday was his second win in a row and the third in four races for Williams, and he is now just 11 points behind the championship leader, his brother Michael.
Juan Pablo Montoya, who won in Monaco last month, was second for the second race in succession to underline Williams' resurgence.
"We had a one-two last week and again today and hopefully the two of us can keep going," said Ralf Schumacher.
"There will be plenty of circuits which don't suit us but we have a long test ahead of us [at Barcelona this week]. We are going in the right direction and hopefully we can continue it.
"As far as a title challenge is concerned, in Formula One you can never be too confident but every driver would love to win a world title.
"I have waited a long time and it might be possible this year."
Montoya is six points behind his team-mate in the title chase and Williams are just three adrift of Ferrari in the constructors' table, but Williams are playing down the prospect of a title challenge.
"It's certainly a very strong performance, but there is a long way to go to the end of the championship," said Williams technical director Patrick Head.
"It shows that the developments we have made to the engine, car and tyres are working very well. We're obviously doing the right thing at the moment

"We had a very good tyre from Michelin, but it has been the other way around with Ferrari [and Bridgestone] before. That's the beauty of F1, it can all change around very quickly."
Michael Schumacher, who extended his series lead over Kimi Raikkonen of McLaren by a point by finishing third in France, acknowledged that Williams have an advantage.
Montoya has said that he thinks Williams will struggle at the next race, the British Grand Prix in two weeks time.
But Head said: "I'm told Juan thinks we'll struggle. It's a complex circuit, very interesting, and we'll be trying very hard."
Team owner Frank Williams said: "Silverstone will be very difficult. Ferrari had the advantage in testing but that was three weeks ago."
Renault technical director Mike Gascoyne praised the progress made by Williams in recent weeks as "very impressive".
Frank Williams said the team had improved the FW25 car by 1.5secs a lap since the first race of the season.
Williams senior operations engineer Sam Michael said: "It is fair to say that the latest improvements have predominantly come from the aerodynamic department and through Michelin's intensive tyre development work."
