Lap 49: Alonso brakes too late for the final chicane and runs wide, but he still manages to hold off Coulthard.

Lap 46: Michael Schumacher, in sixth place after his spin, is 17.1secs behind Coulthard's McLaren.

Lap 45: Ralf Schumacher has a 16-second lead over team-mate Montoya and Williams are on course for a one-two on the weekend they extended their engine contract with BMW until 2009.

Lap 44: Coulthard is pushing Alonso hard for fourth place - Renault's choice of the softer Michelin appears not to have paid off.

Lap 43: Montoya makes a passing attempt around the outside of Michael Schumacher at the bottom hairpin and the Ferrari star spins trying to hold him off. However, he manages to get going again, but may well face a penalty for a push start.

Lap 42: Montoya sets the fastest second and third sector times of the afternoon on his out lap, as he aims to close in on and pass Michael Schumacher for second place.

Coulthard pits in the McLaren but he tries to pull away too early and has to stop again, and fails to beat Alonso out of the pits.

Lap 41: Ralf comes in for his stop and comfortably retains his lead. He is more than the length of the pit straight ahead of his brother.

Lap 39: Michael Schumacher, stuck behind David Coulthard, is losing a second a lap to Ralf Schumacher and the race for victory appears to be over.

Lap 38: Trulli pulls off and is out of the race. Alonso pits at the end of the lap. This is Coulthard's chance to pass the Renault - he must make up the ground he needs now.

Lap 37: Michael Schumacher rejoins just behind the battle between the two Renaults and David Coulthard - not what the world champion would have wanted. Barrichello comes in for his stop.

Lap 36: Michael Schumacher comes in for his second pit stop.

Lap 35: The two Renaults have given themselves a little breathing space ahead of the challenging Coulthard as Ralf Schumacher extends his lead to 4.6secs.

Lap 28: Ralf grabs back some of his lead and is now 3.6secs behind his brother. Montoya is closing in on third placed Barrichello. Fisichella stops in the Jordan.

Lap 20: Ralf does not pit - but Williams are out in the pit lane and he will be in at the end of lap 21.

Lap 19: Ralf Schumacher is still not coming in for his stop, but he is only 21.3secs ahead of Raikkonen and therefore is unlikely to retain the lead when he stops.

Lap 18: Montoya pits in the Williams, along with Alonso and Coulthard.

Lap 17: Raikkonen comes into the pits at the end of lap 16 as third placed Michael Schumacher also comes in. Ralf Schumacher is now in the lead in the Williams. Barrichello comes in at the end of the lap.

1255: The sun is shining and no rain is forecast during the race at this track that is famous for its inclement weather.

McLaren driver Kimi Raikkonen will launch his bid to reclaim the world championship lead from Michael Schumacher from the first pole position of the Finn's career.

Raikkonen bounced back from a series of errors in qualifying in recent races to snatch the fastest lap from the Ferrari driver, who moved into the lead of the world championship for the first time with victory in Canada two weeks ago.

But the race at the Nurburgring in Germany's Eifel mountains is unlikely to be a two-car affair.

Williams drivers Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya qualified third and fourth and both believe they will be strong in the race.

David Coulthard faces another difficult afternoon after a sixth consecutive poor performance in qualifying.

The Scot will start ninth, knowing that his world title chances are already effectively over for another season.

The race starts at 1300 BST.
