Lap 78: Juan Pablo Montoya wins the Monaco Grand Prix - his first victory since September 2001 and the Williams team's first win in Monaco since 1983.

Lap 77: One lap to go and Montoya has Raikkonen trying to pressure him into a mistake and Michael Schumacher trying to do the same to both of them 2.4secs behind.

Lap 76: Two laps to go and Raikkonen is climbing all over the back of race leader Montoya. Michael Schumacher is looming three seconds behind them but surely has not enough time to catch them.

Lap 75: Three laps to go and Montoya and Raikkonen, tied together, are 4.3secs ahead of Michael Schumacher.

Lap 74: Schumacher is now 5.1secs behind race leader Montoya, who has Raikkonen a second behind him. In the pits, Williams technical director Patrick Head looks nervously up at the gathering black clouds.

Lap 73: Five laps to go and the gap between Montoya and Raikkonen stagnates at one second, with Michael Schumacher taking a second off the leaders on that lap.

Lap 72: Montoya appears to have Raikkonen handled, and the two of them pull out 0.5secs on Schumacher.

Lap 71: Montoya leads by 1.2secs from Raikkonen with Schumacher 4.6secs behind the Finn and closing. The race is 78 laps long.

Lap 70: Schumacher gains 0.8secs on race leader Montoya and is now only 6.3secs off the lead and 5.3secs behind Raikkonen.

Lap 69: Lapping backmarkers loses Schumacher some time and he is now 7.2secs behind Montoya and 5.9secs behind Raikkonen.

Lap 68: Michael Schumacher in third place is now just seven seconds behind race leader Montoya and closing in, with Raikkonen between the two men. There are 10 laps to go.

The sun has gone in and the lower temperatures appear to be helping the Bridgestone tyres on the Ferrari. Williams and McLaren use Michelins.

Lap 67: Montoya is a second clear of Raikkonen, with Michael Schumacher closing in and now only 6.9secs behind Raikkonen.

Lap 66: Schumacher is closing on the battle for the lead between Montoya and Raikkonen. The Ferrari is now nine seconds behind Montoya.

Lap 65: Villeneuve retires with an engine failure to cap a wretched weekend for BAR-Honda, for whom Jenson Button did not race after a 180mph accident on Saturday.

Lap 64: The battle between Montoya and Raikkonen is allowing Michael Schumacher to close in slightly. The world champion is now 10.4secs behind the leader.

Lap 63: With 15 laps to go, only a car failure or a driving error can now stop Montoya taking his first win since the Italian Grand Prix in September 2001. Raikkonen, though, is really piling the pressure on in the hope of that error.

Lap 62: Montoya and Raikkonen are only a second apart as they battle for the lead. Michael Schumacher is 11.1secs behind Montoya.

Lap 61: Alonso pits from third place - handing it back to Michael Schumacher. The Spaniard gets out ahead of Trulli and Coulthard.

Lap 60: Raikkonen is right behind Montoya, but this is Monaco and the Finn surely cannot pass. Barrichello pits in the Ferrari.

Lap 59: Michael Schumacher pits - he loses the lead - and the race as well unless there are problems for both Montoya and Raikkonen.

Lap 58: Twenty laps and a Michael Schumacher pit stop to go and the Ferrari star is 11.8secs ahead of the battling Montoya and Raikkonen.

Lap 57: Schumacher's lead is 10.3secs with Montoya only 1.5secs ahead of Raikkonen. When will the Ferrari make its final stop?

Lap 56: Trulli and Coulthard both stop and the Renault just manages to stay ahead. Schumacher's lead is now 9.4secs.

Lap 55: Schumacher extends his lead to 8.4secs, with Raikkonen in third place 1.9secs behind Montoya. It all depends on how many laps the Ferrari can do before Schumacher has to stop again.

Lap 54: Michael Schumacher has only a 6.8sec lead over Montoya and the Ferrari surely has to stop again.

Lap 53: Raikkonen pits - and Montoya takes the lead back.

Lap 52: Montoya is 23secs behind Raikkonen, which should be enough to get him back into the lead when the Finn stops. Ralf Schumacher has moment at Rascasse, locking his brakes and needing to reverse back on to the track.

Lap 51: Raikkonen has a 19secs lead over Michael Schumacher, who is four seconds ahead of Montoya, who has done his final stop.

Lap 50: Raikkonen gains a further three seconds on Michael Schumacher, who has had a very poor middle sector of the race.

Lap 49: Montoya pits from the lead and Raikkonen does the fastest lap of the race. The Colombian comes out in third place just four seconds behind Michael Schumacher, who now appears to be out of the battle for victory.

Lap 48: Raikkonen has a bad lap and loses a second as Ralf Schumacher pits from fourth place.

Lap 47: Now Montoya and Raikkonen both do personal bests. The Colombian is due in for his stop in two laps.

Lap 46: Raikkonen responds with another personal best and the lead is now down to 3.9secs again. He and leader Montoya are now more than 16 seconds clear of Michael Schumacher.

Lap 45: Montoya responds with his own personal fastest lap and builds his lead back to 4.4secs. The Colombian is now 15secs ahead of Michael Schumacher in third place, although the Ferrari will be stopping about 10 laps later for its final stop.

Lap 44: Raikkonen sets his personal fastest lap to reduce Montoya's lead to 3.8secs.

Lap 43: No change in the top eight positions, although Trulli is slowly dropping back from the battle between the Schumachers, probably taking anyone behind him out of the battle for victory.

Lap 42: It is nip and tuck between Montoya and Raikkonen, with a gap of about four seconds between them. Michael Schumacher is a further 10 seconds behind.

Lap 41: Montoya's lead over third-placed Michael Schumacher is over 10 seconds for the first time. Raikkonen's McLaren is 4.1 secs behind the Colombian's Williams.

Lap 40: It is stalemate between Montoya and Raikkonen, but Michael Schumacher is now nearly 10 seconds behind. Former leader Ralf Schumacher is now right up with his brother.

Lap 39: Montoya's lead is now 4.6secs, with Michael Schumacher a further second behind Raikkonen.

Lap 38: Montoya extends his lead to 4.5secs over Raikkonen and 7.5secs over Michael Schumacher.

Lap 37: Raikkonen takes another 0.4secs out of Montoya and the lead is now 3.1secs. Michael Schumacher continues to be slower than both of them.

Lap 36: Raikkonen takes 0.2secs out of Montoya's lead and pulls out a second on Michael Schumacher.

Lap 31: Race leader Schumacher comes into the pits and comes out third just ahead of his brother.

Lap 30: Barrichello pits in the Ferrari as Michael Schumacher sets the fastest lap with a 1:14.7.

Lap 29: Alonso pits from second place and is behind Coulthard as he comes out. The Spaniard was badly hurt by his lap in traffic.

Lap 28: Michael Schumacher is in the lead and Alonso in second place is held up badly in traffic and is now more than two seconds ahead of the Renault.

Lap 27: Trulli and Coulthard come in for their pit stops.

Lap 26: There is 2.8secs covering the current top four - Trulli, Schumacher, Alonso, Coulthard.

Lap 25: Raikkonen comes in for his tyres - he comes out behind Montoya and ahead of Ralf Schumacher.

Lap 24: Leader Raikkonen gets caught behind Wilson's Minardi, losing him 0.7secs just when he needs to build an advantage.

Lap 23: Montoya stops for fuel and tyres, beating Ralf Schumacher out, rejoining ahead of his team-mate in seventh place.

Lap 22: Ralf rejoins in eighth place - good timing by Williams. The German is ahead of a train of cars being held up by Toyota driver Cristiano da Matta. Montoya sets a blistering fastest lap but Raikkonen is only 0.2secs slower.

Lap 21: Montoya is climbing all over the back of team-mate and race leader Ralf Schumacher, who pulls into the pits for his scheduled stop.

Lap 20: Montoya is now only 0.4secs behind leader Ralf Schumacher. Raikkonen is holding a watching brief and appears capable of keeping up with the Williams cars no matter what they do.

Lap 19: Montoya is now less than a second behind Ralf after setting the fastest lap of the race. Raikkonen is 1.6secs adrift, with Trulli, ahead of Michael Schumacher, now 11secs behind the leader.

Lap 18: Webber is back in the pits again in a Jaguar and is out of the race.

Lap 17: Barrichello has dropped back to 2.9secs adrift of Alonso as the first three close up.

Lap 16: Ralf responds to Montoya and pulls out 0.2secs on the Colombian.

Lap 15: Montoya sets the fastest lap and gains 0.4secs on Ralf to be 1.4secs off the lead. Trulli has dropped back to nine seconds adrift, with Michael Schumacher a further second back.

Lap 14: Ralf sets another fastest lap, but Montoya and Raikkonen all but match it. Mark Webber comes in for a routine pit stop in the Jaguar.

Lap 13: Ralf Schumacher sets the fastest lap, as Montoya, Raikkonen, Alonso and Coulthard all set personal best times. Montoya is only 1.7secs behind Ralf now.

Lap 12: It is stalemate in the top eight, with any of those drivers seemingly in with a chance of a good finish.

Lap 11: The gap between race leader Ralf Schumacher and Trulli in fourth place is stable at seven seconds. Montoya in second place sets fastest lap.

Lap 10: Raikkonen appears to be slightly faster than the two Williams cars in front of him.

Lap nine: Raikkonen, just under four seconds behind leader Ralf Schumacher, is five seconds ahead of title rival Michael Schumacher and sets the fastest lap.

Lap eight: The gaps between Ralf, Montoya and Raikkonen appear to have stabilised, while the Finn is pulling away from Trulli's Renault.

Lap seven: Michael Schumacher is not challenging Trulli as hard as he might be expected to.

Lap six: Ralf, who has set the fastest lap on lap five, appears to be building a lead over Montoya, and the Colombian the same over Raikkonen. With another fastest lap, Ralf has a 2.4secs lead over Montoya at the end of the lap, who is two seconds ahead of Raikkonen.

Lap five: The race restarts and Montoya is right on the tail of race leader Ralf Schumacher, with a small gap behind the Williams cars. There are no place changes.

Lap four: The safety car will pull off at the end of the lap.

Lap three: A crane will remove Frentzen's Sauber so it should not take too long to clear up the accident.

Lap two: The safety car is deployed so the marshals can clear Frentzen's Sauber. Michael Schumacher will be annoyed that he did not manage to pass Trulli, who tends to be slower in races than he is in qualifying.

Lap one: Ralf Schumacher makes a good start and Montoya takes second ahead of Raikkonen into the first corner, with Trulli fourth, Michael Schumacher fifth and Fernando Alonso up from eighth to fifth.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen hits the wall and his stranded in the middle of the track by the exit of the second Swimming Pool chicane.

1300: The cars head off on their formation lap with Ralf Schumacher at the head of the field in bright sunshine.
