Raikkonen said he enjoyed getting one over Schumacher

The Finn exceeded the 120km/h (75mph) limit by just 1km/h, according to the team, but it cost him a drive-through penalty which handed the lead to Juan Pablo Montoya.

The Colombian then made his own mistake, giving the win to the second McLaren of David Coulthard.

Montoya admits mistake

It was the second time in eight months that a small error has cost Raikkonen the chance of recording his first win.

He lost control on oil in the closing stages of last year's French Grand Prix while leading Michael Schumacher's Ferrari.

Adrian Newey, McLaren's technical director, said: "I'm very disappointed for Kimi, who was just 1km/h over the limit. It's very frustrating for him.

"After Magny-Cours last year he must be wondering when he is going to get his first win.

"But David [Coulthard] kept it clean and benefited from other people's mistakes."

Raikkonen said he was "disappointed" but that he had enjoyed his battle with Michael Schumacher earlier in the race.

The Finn had held his ground and forced the Ferrari on to the grass when Schumacher tried to pass him at the first corner on lap 38.

"I had a long battle with Michael Schumacher and managed to keep him behind me," Raikkonen said.

"He always seemed to get a fast exit out of the last corner, which allowed him to catch up and challenge me during braking for the first chicane.

"At one point we were side by side but I knew that I was on the inside and the corner wasn't wide enough for two cars so I stayed ahead. It was real fun. It was an exciting race."
