| Toyota aim for step forward ![]() Panis puts the new Toyota through its paces Toyota have targeted regular points finishes when they embark on their second season in Formula One this year. The German-based team, who made a moderately impressive debut in 2002, unveiled the TF103 at the Paul Ricard circuit in France on Wednesday morning. And the team run by the Japanese car giant want to make a step forward in their second season by getting one car in the top 10 on the grid at every race. Team boss Ove Andersson said: "In 2002 we picked up two lucky championship points.
"In 2003 our aim is to score points regularly based on our competitiveness and the new points-scoring system." The top eight drivers will receive points this year instead of the traditional top six system. Andersson added: "Our aims for 2003 are higher but realistic compared to what we achieved last year. "We want to qualify at least one TF103 in the top 10 at all the races." "It is an ambitious target, but we have to aim high this year because we are no longer the new kids on the block. "It is what everyone expects from Toyota as the world's third largest car manufacturer and we will do our utmost to achieve this goal." Toyota Motorsport president Tsutomu Tomita said the team "still have a long way to go".
Lead driver Olivier Panis said: "I have been incredibly impressed with what I have found at Toyota. "All the basic ingredients are in place for the team to make a big jump up the grid in 2003, but for me to comment further on how much progress we can make, I need to test the new car. "Even then we will have to wait until [the first race in] Melbourne to discover where we are in relation to our competitors." Toyota's main aim will be to improve the downforce generated by their car, which was its main weakness in 2002. Chief designer Gustav Brunner said: "We have changed everything and improved every aspect of the car with the main emphasis on aerodynamics."
Among the new design features on the TF103 are a Ferrari-style ultra-low engine cover to improve airflow to the rear wing, and more tightly-waisted rear bodywork. The new driver pairing of Panis and Cristiano da Matta were unveiled, with experienced Frenchman Panis set to give the car its first run in testing. Toyota also revealed that Brazil's former BAR driver Ricardo Zonta will be their reserve and test driver in 2003. The Brazilian revealed that he was offered the job by Toyota out of the blue on Christmas Eve, having not heard from them since brief discussions in the summer. Da Matta admitted that the presence of Zonta - who is rated highly but was largely disappointing in his two seasons with BAR - put him under added pressure to perform. | See also: 07 Jan 03 | Formula One 06 Jan 03 | Formula One 05 Jan 03 | Formula One 08 Jan 03 | Photo Galleries Top Formula One stories now: Links to more Formula One stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
