![]() | Ecclestone issues GP warning ![]() Silverstone: Set for a 45m transformation Silverstone's major upgrade must go ahead if Britain is to retain its place in the F1 calendar, says the sport's supremo Bernie Ecclestone. Ecclestone is funding 15m of the 45m that will be spent on the Northamptonshire track in the next couple of years. It will be used on a circuit redesign, including the building of a spectacular banked parabolic curve, new pit and paddock facilities, better grandstands and improvements to traffic flow. "What we are striving to do is make a facility that is as good or better than most of the facilities in the rest of the world," he said. "The alternative is to move. We want motor racing to stay in Britain. "If we are not going to do this, we are definitely going to be on our way."
BRDC president Sir Jackie Stewart called on the Government to match the 45m investment when he unveiled the vision for Silverstone last month. The extra money would fund a family attraction with an interactive visitors' centre and museum, as well as a drivers' academy and facilities for technical training. But Ecclestone is not confident that the Government will plough money into British motorsport. "I think they will probably say 'these people make enough money out of motor racing so why should we put any money in?'. "We have already raised enough money to do what we want to do, it is a question of whether we want to do something better." | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top Formula One stories: Links to top Formula One stories are at the foot of the page. | |||
