Ryan Farquhar in action at Killalane on Sunday |
Ryan Farquhar has called for changes to safety procedures and a reduction in the maximum cylinder capacity of motorcycles raced on road circuits. "Racing motorcycles on public roads is always dangerous but it has got to the stage where we should be looking to reduce the capacity," said Farquhar. "The bikes are getting faster and faster and the country roads we are racing on very narrow. "The 1000cc bikes will have to go and possibly the 600cc ones too." Farquhar was speaking in the wake of the death of Victor Gilmore, who was killed at the Killalane road races on Sunday. "I get a huge adrenaline rush from road racing - I love doing it and know the dangers, but I have started riding some smaller capacity bikes now and still get a buzz from them. They are definitely safer," said the Dungannon rider. "Spectators and marshalls are getting hurt too and insurance is going to become a major issue. "It has got to the stage where we have to sit down and sort this out. "I know in my own mind that something has to be done and all interested parties need to sit down and sort it out.
