York's Thompson returns to BTCC

Two times champion James Thompson has made a successful return to the British Touring Car Championship.

The York driver was champion in 2002 and 2004 before moving to the World Championship in 2005.

He managed a third place at Thruxton on his return at the weekend in Team Dynamic's Honda Civic.

"It's exciting and it's new. It refreshes people's memories that I still race and I still enjoy racing in the BTCC," said Thompson

"In 2006, I did both the British and World Championship and racing in any high profile championship is important for my profile," he added.

I want to come and help the team

"If you get asked by one of the top teams to come and race for them, and it fits in with what I want to do, I want to come and help the team.

"We're going to try and make something happen. I'm a little bit rusty because I've not driven since November, but every time you get in the car it's like putting an old suit back on.

Despite making his comeback, Thompson has not ruled out a return to the World Championship.

"I'm here for as much as I can do fitting around various programmes I've got going on.

"I can't tell you everything but I'm definitely racing in Denmark and Australia and racing here so it's a pretty busy schedule."
