Compton scored 14 points against the Isle of Wight in his final outing

Sheffield Tigers captain Andre Compton has retired with immediate effect.

The 31-year-old made the announcement after the Tigers' defeat to the Isle of Wight in the Young Shield on Thursday. He scored 14 points on the night.

Tigers team manager Eric Boocock told BBC Radio Sheffield: "He's been one of the best captains I've worked with."

"He's a great rider, and it's a shame he's calling it a day. I'm sure that not only will the team miss him, but the backroom staff and fans too."
