Surtees warns Conway over F1 bid

Motorsport legend John Surtees has warned GP2 ace Mike Conway he may find it difficult to break into Formula One.

The Sevenoaks racer got his first win in GP2 at Monaco in May but Surtees told BBC Radio Kent he has a lot more to do to be a Grand Prix driver.

"Monaco was a lift in his career but Mike has more to do when F1 teams come looking for the next Lewis Hamilton.

"Unfortunately Formula One has distanced itself from series like GP2, it's not an easy route anymore."

Surtees, who is the only man to win world titles in both car and motorbike racing, said the 24-year-old had enhanced his reputation with his first victory.

"He was fortunate to be in pole position but Mike kept his head well in the second race at Monaco, it was certainly the highlight of his GP2 career which hadn't being going so well."

Conway, 24, raced against Lewis Hamilton in karts and was the British Formula Renault champion in 2004, a year after Hamilton had taken the crown.

The Sevenoaks racer drives for the Trident team in GP2 and has been part of Honda's F1 racing young driver programme since 2007.
