Scotland's Franchitti is driving in his first Nascar series

Scotsman Dario Franchitti broke his ankle in the Nascar developmental series Aaron's 312 race in Talladega.

In his first season in Nascar, the Indy Car champion and Indianapolis 500 winner wrecked his Dodge when he lost the right rear tyre on the 10th lap.

Franchitti's car slammed into the wall and span down the track before it was rammed by Larry Gunselman's vehicle.

X-rays confirmed the 34-year-old fractured his left ankle but it is not clear how long he will be out for.
