Jersey racing driver James Walker has decided to stay with the Fortec Motorsport team for the 2008 World Series by Renault.

Walker had attracted interest from other teams at World Series level after his first season in the championship.

Walker had his maiden World Series victory at Donington Park in August but says Fortec is the right choice.

"I know that the team will continue to push me hard and I am ready and willing to put the work in," he said.

The World Series by Renault is seen by many as being just below GP2, the final step before Formula One.

Walker, who came to the sport from Jersey at a relatively late stage having never raced karts as a youngster, gained the attention of a host of teams with his improved performances in 2007 after stepping up from Formula Three.

Walker finished his rookie World Series season in 2007 in 19th place overall, but feels he can go a lot better having had a season's worth of experience.

"I enjoyed the whole season as we made steady progress as we went through the races," he added. "I know I still have more to give and I have continued to train hard over the winter to make sure I am ready for the new season."

The World Series has helped launch the careers of several successful Formula One drivers including two-times World Champion Fernando Alonso, Heikki Kovalainen and Robert Kubica.

James is the right choice for Fortec, said Technical Director, Chris Gorne, who was Walker's race engineer in 2007.

He did a good job for us last year and made significant improvements as the season went on. All the teams have changes with the new car, so working with the same driver reduces the variables and enables us to hit the ground running.

"I am sure James will be a much stronger and confident competitor from the first race, his application and feedback are exemplary so it's just a matter of time."

The new specification car is tested for the first time in Valencia on 5 March. It features improved aerodynamic performance and increased engine power.

The season begins at Monza in April and the drivers will once again tackle the famous Monaco Grand Prix circuit.
